Train

To travel through the country, you can use the Dutch railway, Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS). If you are planning to travel regularly, (for more than 125,-) you can consider buying a “voordeelurenkaart”, it gives you a 40% reduction on Monday to Friday after 9. a.m., during the weekends and on public holidays. The price is 45,-. You can buy this card at a NS train station. You need your passport and a passport photograph. You can check time tables at http://www.ns.nl (also in English).

Bus

If you want to travel by bus, you need a multiple ride ticket (strippenkaart). The bus driver stamps the “strips” you need for the ride. Ask at the bus station for information on the system. The strippenkaart is available at the post office, bus- and railway station and news agents and tobacconists. If you buy them in the bus, they are more expensive.

Taxi

You can easily get a taxi at any address in the city by calling UTC (Utrechtse Taxi Centrale), 030 – 2300 400, see also www.taxi.nl

Bicycle

The bicycle is the most practical of getting around in the city. You can rent a bike, or, maybe better, buy one. You can rent bikes at most railway stations. Several bikeshops sell used bikes, especially Wheels, Nobelstraat 3-5, and Hei bike, Nachtegaalstraat 1.
