Through
the generosity of Johannes van Tilburg, a Dutch born and LA based architect,
UCLA has instituted an annual lecture in his name. It grows out of the
Utrecht-UCLA Lecture and will soon be entirely supported by the Van Tilburg
gift.
The
first lecture was held on February 23, 2005 at the UCLA Faculty
Center. The lecturer
was Wiljan van den Akker, the incoming Dean of Humanities at Utrecht, and his subject was the nature of
poetry in 20th century Dutch literature. Gary Schwartz gave the second Van Tilburg
lecture in 2007.
In February 2008 Paul Schnabel, the
leading expert on contemporary immigration to The Netherlands lectured
on Immigration and the Question of Dutch Identity. In February 2009
Ido de Haan (Utrecht University) will speak about Jews in The Netherlands
after 1945. The event is always held in the Faculty Club of UCLA, at
Hilgard and Westholme.
