Heroes, Traitors and
Collaborators: The Netherlands under Nazi Occupation
September 27-29, 2002
Organized
by the UCLA College of Letters and Science and Utrecht University, The
Netherlands, as a project of the Utrecht-UCLA Academic Exchange Program,
“Heroes, Traitors, and Collaborators: The Netherlands under Nazi Occupation”
was a three-day film festival that introduced some of the most compelling and
provocative cinematic stories ever told about the Second World War. Invaded by the Nazis in 1940, The
Netherlands witnessed among its citizens the best and worst of personal moral
choices when their freedom was placed at high risk. Their stories inspired
many unforgettable Dutch movies in
the half-century that followed, including Soldier of Orange (Soldaat
van Oranje) (1977), directed by Paul Verhoeven; The Spitting Image
(Als twee druppels water) (1963), directed by Fons Rademakers; Pastorale
1943 (1978), directed by Wim Verstappen; Bitter Sweet (Het bittere
kruid) (1985), directed by Kees van Oostrum; The Girl with the Red
hair (Het meisje met het rode haar) (1981), directed by Ben Verbong; and The
Assault (De aanslag) (1986), directed by Fons Rademakers. Hidden from mainstream American audiences,
this remarkable series of Dutch films was introduced to Los Angeles by the UCLA-Utrecht Exchange
Program, with commentary by acclaimed director Paul Verhoeven (“Total
Recall,” “Basic Instinct) and internationally renowned scholars in 2002.
